Short History:  Formed with the merger of the National Baptist Convention of America, the National Baptist Education Convention, and the Baptist Foreign Mission Convention.  In 1915 contention over the independence of the Publishing Board let to a split between those who supported the independence of the Publishing Board and those who thought the Board should report to the Convention.  The Convention renamed itself the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A.

Local Churches:  There are several churches in the Louisville area.  For a mega-church experience go to St. Stephen Baptist Church, 1018 South 15th Street, Louisville, KY 40210 which also has campuses in Southern Indiana and in Shephardsville, KY.  Another option is Bates Memorial Baptist Church, 620 East Lampton St., Louisville, KY 40203.  Bates is in one of the poorest neighborhoods in town and runs its own community development corporation.
